While killing time in Ahmedabad, I visited the Dada Hari Wav, an ornately carved well. It was designed not only to store water, but also to serve as a community meeting place where people could socialize and escape from the heat. The 5-story underground well was so intricately carved, it was amazing to see how something so functional was once so beautiful. Nowadays, it's filled with bats and just a bit creepy...
Keeping with the theme of haunted, on the former Portugese-colony island of Diu there are some caves that the Portugese used to obtain their building materials from. There's weird geometric patterns chiseled from the stone, too square to be manmade, and root-covered stairs that don't really seem to go anyplace.
